Joiner
silicone
4”x35”x38”

Joiner slides onto Alfredo, an L8x8x1 angle beam. It has five elastic connection points for his wife and four of his children.

Re-orienter
cast iron, steel
14”x12.5”x12.5”

Slide a mis-oriented member into the slot, bolt them in, and crank to turn the member until proper orientation is achieved.

Aligner
silicone, steel
68”x33”x3.5”

Clavicle Insert
pink marble, silicone
1.25”x2.25”x0.25”

This manubrial insert fits nicely into clavicles separated by 55mm, a hypothetical beauty standard in a hypothetical society. The separation is achieved with technology similar to dental braces.

Standardized Curve 1
steel, paper, rubber
4’x1.5’x1.5’

y(x) = -1.798611 + 0.38891x - 0.1328618x^2 + 0.007830254x^3 - 0.0001278131x^4 is the formula of an arbitrary curve that was used to define the form of this piece. It reflects on standardized appropriation, control and containment of natural materials in infrastructure.

Standardized Curve 2
wood, steel

8’x10”x4”

y(x) = -1.798611 + 0.38891x - 0.1328618x^2 + 0.007830254x^3 - 0.0001278131x^4 is the formula of an arbitrary curve that was used to define the form of this piece. It recreates a stock 2x4 in the form of this curvature and sits in a steel support of the same form.

Rope
laser cut acrylic, spray paint
9’x3”x3”

Rope translates the function of a rope; strength, to a contemporary representation of this quality. It uses visual signifiers for industrial strength; automated fabrication, regularity of form, and synthetic coloration, to create the facade of a rope that lacks its intended function.

Corrected Family Structure is a series of corrective devices for a family structure based on the 1975 Cuban Family Code. To determine each pieces’ form, Iribarren Vázquez developed translation keys quantifying her family’s personal characteristics and complex interpersonal relationships, mapping them to beams and connection types from the American Institute of Steel Construction’s Manual. Through conversations with her mother about their family in Cuba and reference to the Family Code, she developed corrective mechanisms for “fixing” the family structure wherever it was “broken”.
